Hunter College – North Building
New York, NY
Client: City University of New York – Hunter College
Project: North Building Projects
Epic’s Role: Construction Manager at Risk/ Design-Build
CM/Build Task Order Cost: $3 million
As a part of Epic’s $60 million CM / Design-Build Contract with the City University of New York, Epic was selected to provide for multi-phase renovations, new facilities and infrastructure upgrade projects at Hunter College’s NYC Landmarks designated North Building. Projects comprised a new Bird Song Behavioral Laboratory, Fish Psychology Laboratory Suites and a Chiller Replacement.
The Bird Song Behavioral Laboratory project created a research suite, two behavioral laboratories, a preparation room, a general work station area, a conference room and a private office. This project incorporated many sustainable features, innovative energy conservation features and recycled materials.
The Psychology Fish Laboratory project involved the creation of suites that included wet lab, surgery space, and chronic testing rooms, private offices, professors/students meeting spaces, faculty offices, conference/lab meeting areas, fish labs a histology room, an experiment room, and electrophysiology rooms.
Upgrades to the Computer Data Center’s cooling system were critical as the DC risked shutdown due to overheating. Phasing and coordination was required for this complex project with extensive planning for temporary cooling systems, phasing, and chilled water-piping from the basement level, to the 7th floor rooftop. This project include the installation of two new high-efficiency sixty-ton rooftop chillers with state-of-the-art energy efficient control systems.
All parts of this project were planned and coordinated during the heavily-active seven-day per week programs at Hunter College as well as the densely populated and historic Upper East Side neighborhood.
All work was planned and successfully completed with no loss time injuries or incidents and less than 5% change orders
